Background to this Event;
The first Saint Thomas's Day celebration by the Worshipful Company of Architects was held during the lockdown of Summer 2020 with a theme of "Isolation" - it was a huge success and so we hope will now form a long lasting tradition for many years to come.
The idea resulted from a suggestion by the Master, Valerie Owen Le Vaillant that, as we were in lockdown and unable to meet in person, we try to encourage greater activity and events on social media to keep the Company members in contact.
Chris Williamson had been reading about the formation of the Livery Companies and that they celebrated their “Guild Day” usually on the Feast Day of the Patron Saint of their particular trade of profession.
The Guild Day was an opportunity for the companies to focus on their charitable giving and their apprentices, which coincidentally was a particular focus of Valerie during her time as Master. After some research and discussions with the St Lawrence Jewry Chaplain, David Parrott, we established that Saint Thomas was acknowledged to be the Patron Saint of Architecture. Saint Barbara has a claim owing to her being imprisoned in a tower by her Father who wanted her to renounce Christianity. Thomas, however has the greater claim, not because of his doubting and need for proof, but his mission to India where he built several churches.
It was decided to charge an entry fee for the competition and also ask the entrants to donate their work for auction to raise money. As Saint Thomas’ Day is July 3rd that date became a sensible focus for the events (or the closest working day).
This Year's Event;
This year the theme is "Rebirth & Renewal"
We will be involving the Glazier's Company with whom we have collaborated on other events during lockdown. This promises therefore to be an even bigger and better celebration of the built environment and the individual talents of those who help to create it.
Drawn/painted artwork entries only please on the above theme. Entries will be displayed on our website and winners announced on the 2nd July 2021 after an online service to celebrate St Thomas, architecture and associated professions.
Please submit your electronic entries by Friday 18th June 2021 to [email protected] - there is a fee of £10 to enter - register using the form below.
As mentioned above, we also ask if entries may be donated and auctioned (not compulsory) at our online auction on the 9th July - see separate event listing for details.
Proceeds of entry fees and online auction winning bids will be divided equally and donated to the charities of the Architects' and Glaziers' Companies and also St Lawrence Jewry.
There will be a separate Student art competition, but this work will not be auctioned.
