Recognising that Commonwealth countries are projected to account for nearly 50% of the projected growth in the world’s urban population to 2050 and that cities are responsible for over 70% of global carbon emissions, the Declaration on Sustainable Urbanisation adopted by Heads of Government at CHOGM 2022 recognises the need for integrated strategies to address the challenges of climate change and rapid urbanisation. These strategies need to deliver safe and sustainable urbanisation and to support cities to mobilise resources to develop scalable programmes to address key challenges, while reducing risk and vulnerability.

Following on from his last CPD talk given in 2021, Peter Oborn will be joined by a panel of experts to showcase some of the work being undertaken by a diverse range of partners to translate the Call to Action on Sustainable Urbanisation into a programme of practical action.

Proposed format for the event;

  • Background to the Call to Action on Sustainable Urbanisation across the Commonwealth
  • CHOGM 2022 and the Declaration on Sustainable Urbanisation
  • Green City Kigali, a catalyst for change in Rwanda and beyond: Feilden Clegg Bradley
  • The Lusaka Base Map, a pilot project illustrating the power of AI to achieve transformational change: Ordnance Survey
  • The Rapid Planning Toolkit, empowering local communities to plan for future growth: The Prince’s Foundation
  • Commonwealth Youth for Sustainable Development (CYSU) network, engaging future leaders
  • Panel Discussion and Q&A

This talk will count towards the annual CPD hours under the RIBA "Sustainable Architecture" topic.

This HYBRID event will take place at Temple Bar London and online. A recording will be available post event.
